In Syntactic Labyrinths, after an abnormally strong solar flare, Earth suffered from a large hole in its Ozone layer. The consequences were fatal. Temperatures quickly raised and the lack of UV-Filtration caused the forests to burn. The oceans kept heating up killing its life as well as boiling the water on the ocean floor. These flammable gas bubbles raised to the surface where lower pressure caused them to pop. These explosions of air caused tsunamis all across the Earth. Floods and draught have terraformed our planet. As time went on the air started filling with flammable and poisonous gasses that were always ready to ignite with a spark of lightning. Napalm explosions in the sky would race across the heavens until dying out. Even though rare, these cataclysmic events are a marvel to behold.
Scene 02, shot 02 is the first time we see Earth from outer space. This shot must have been the first one we started R&D on two years ago! If we could get this to work, other planets would follow. It took many attempts to get the atmosphere right, as well as telling a story within the image. We wanted Earth to still be instantly recognisable as our Planet, while still establishing the apocalyptic scenario. To me there is no such thing as ugly nature. The more hostile the circumstances on Earth, the more primal it should feel. I’m happy with the results!
