Genesis Orchard : III : Asmodeus
An excerpt from The Scroll of Apple Rot
Apple Rot
Translated excerpt from The Scroll, as preserved by the Traveller.
These words were not meant to be spoken. They were not meant to be written. They were not meant to be read. And yet they are here, and so you will know…
What follows is one of the seven visions. I retell it not with the tongue of the scholar, but as I saw it in the dark valley of the tree.
This is an invitation to a Dream of Genesis.
Epochs have passed since the tragic spread of the Orchard.
The Orchard never slept.
And neither did they...
Dark spirits moved in lines, wandering the corridors of trees.
Each passing the apples from hand to hand.
Each fruit darker. Sweeter.
Heavier with desire for more.
Dripping.
The citizens of Solomon’s empire waited for the dark spirits to bring their fruit.
Mouths open but their hunger was not for food.
An unquenchable thirst.
The apples consumed all indiscriminatorily.
Rich and poor swallowed pulp, and the pulp swallowed them.
Naked bodies tangled in streets,
writhing in endless patterns.
Breathing only in perversion…
Stone walls sweated like flesh.
Corridors filled with a chorus of gasps.
Every doorway echoed with moans that never ceased.
Every touch and kiss spread rot deeper.
The air itself pressed down.
Thick. Wet.
Forcing bodies together.
They devoured each other with mouths that no longer remembered prayer.
The Temple of Solomon stood half-built.
Servants of Solomon abandoned their posts.
Each to be found committing adultery amongst the common folks.
They whispered of Solomon.
That he had abandoned them.
His ring was not his ring.
His voice trembled like a puppet on a string.
Some whispered he was replaced.
Others whispered he was consumed.
No one could tell the difference.
No one resisted.
They were too busy feeding. Biting.
The rotten flesh of the apples tastes the same as the flesh of their carnal desires.
Rain no longer fed the Orchard.
Only blood...
And the fermenting juices of its own rot.
The spirits and thieves bent over in laughter.
The Empire drowned.
And so will you.
