The Chubbuck Action Technique
Recently I had the pleasure of following an acting masterclass by Ivana Chubbuck.
She is a wonderful coach most well known for her Chubbuck Technique.
Boiled down the technique is about finding your inner struggles and emotions, and then amplifying them to help you achieve a goal.
In each scene, the characters have an objective they want to reach.
But the obstacles in their way, both physical and emotional, have to be overcome honestly.
The truth of an actor lies behind the eyes.
The core of a human’s suffering is what should be brought out to gain and explore catharsis.
It’s important to embrace your pain and turn it into solutions.
And if you can’t find the solution by the end of a scene, even when you’re lost, don’t accept the loss.
Let the scene end with you still believing you can overcome the pain.
When a character is victimised but overcomes the challenges we feel their weakness changing into power.
The pain needs to come out. It needs to be expressed. However subtle it ends up on the screen.
Make bold choices. Don’t censor yourself.
